Exxon to Combine Two Units, Relocate to Houston to Cut Costs

(Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. will combine its chemical and refining units and relocate its corporate headquarters to the Houston area as it cuts costs and seeks to improve efficiencies.

The oil giant, based in Irving, Texas, has sought to streamline parts of its sprawling business and reduce costs over the past few years in an effort to improve financial performance. Exxon announced the move in a statement on Monday.

Exxon’s biggest U.S. office is in Spring, just north of Houston, and was opened under former Chief Executive Officer Rex Tillerson in 2014.

Irving, a city just west of Dallas, is home to Exxon’s famous “God Pod,” a large tree-lined office park that houses the company’s top executives including CEO Darren Woods. Exxon has been there for more than 30 years after departing a skyscraper in Manhattan.
