April 11 (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc's top dealmaker and global co-head of mergers and acquisitions, Mark Shafir, plans to retire after nearly 15 years, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters on Tuesday.
He has advised clients and led top M&A teams in a career spanning thirty-five years on Wall Street. He has also led Citi's global M&A franchise since he joined the firm in 2008 and was most recently co-head of the unit with Cary Kochman.
Shafir was instrumental in developing Citi's M&A franchise and worked on significant deals including the $38 billion sale of Anadarko to rival Occidental Corp in 2019 and more recently the $61 billion Broadcom-VMware deal and the $25 billion proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger.
He began his investment banking career at Goldman Sachs in 1985 and went on to assume leadership roles at firms including Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers. (Reporting by Mehnaz Yasmin in Bengaluru; Editing by Devika Syamnath)
