MILAN, June 16 (Reuters) - Intel is continuing talks with Italy on a possible investment in the country, the U.S. chipmaker said on Friday after announcing it would invest up to $4.6 billion on a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in Poland.

"We appreciate the Italian government's commitment to developing a competitive microelectronics ecosystem," Intel said in a statement to Reuters.

Intel last year announced it aimed to build an advanced packaging and assembly chip factory in Italy as part of a wider long-term investment plan to expand capacity across Europe. The deal, which is expected to involve state subsidies, has not yet been finalised.
