Goldman Sachs (GS) second quarter earnings missed Street estimates on both the top and bottom lines with profits plunging 58 percent from a year ago. The bank was hit by both a decline in investment banking and large impairment charges related to its real estate holdings and its consumer banking business.
JMP Securities Analyst Devin Ryan told Yahoo Finance Live he wasn't surprised by the results saying "we knew this was going to be a tough quarter and that it was going to be messy, and I think that's exactly what it was."
The bank's results are also raising more questions about CEO David Solomon's job security. Puck News Founding Partner William D. Cohan says, "I think it's kind of crunch time" for Solomon. "If David [Solomon] hasn't righted this ship in the third and fourth quarters, everything I'm hearing is that his tenure could be in jeopardy," Cohan said.
